Introduction
To best utilise product pages, you should be showcasing high-quality content. Having content of a high standard highlights that you are knowledgeable about the products you are selling and can communicate clearly which, in turn, boosts customer trust and allows them to make an informed purchase.
Furthermore, having the right copy in the right section of the page will boost the SEO of your product page, helping it to appear as a result to those browsing relevant keywords in search engines like Google.
This guide will help you optimise the content on your product pages for both search engines and customers.
Product Page Breakdown:
Product Name
The product name is the first thing that customers will see, along with the default image, when browsing through categories and search results on the website. It is also displayed at the top of the product page and is also one of the most important aspect of the page in terms of SEO. For these reasons, you must ensure that it is written and formatted correctly.
What makes a great product title?
- Follows the correct format – The product title should follow the following format, missing out parts that do not apply to the product:
- Brand, Model, Name, Size, Material, Colour, Volume
- Not too long or too short – If the product name is too long, it will be cut off on listers and product pages. On the other hand, if the product name is too short then it likely doesn’t contain enough keywords. There is a max limit of 80 characters, though the ideal product name length is 70 characters or less.
- States what the product is – Whilst descriptive words are great, the product title should also include what the product actually is (e.g. t-shirt, cushion, chair).
- No keyword stuffing – Bulking your product name out with keywords will result in penalisation by search engines. You should not repeat words or put multiple synonyms of the same word within your product title. If there are alternative words that capture what your product looks like, is, or does, then save this for the features or description.
- No specification information – The title should not contain dimensions, material, weight, or any other information that should be in the specifications section unless it is genuinely part of the product name or is standard for the product type (e.g. shed dimensions in ft)
- No abbreviations or special characters – Unless it is part of the brand name, the title should not contain punctuation. Each word should be written in full in a way that customers will understand (e.g. ‘assorted’ rather than ‘ass’ and ‘Make Your Own’ instead of ‘MYO’).
- Pack/quantity clearly displayed – Write ‘Set of 3’ or ‘Pack of 3’ instead of ‘3Pc’. This should be displayed at the start of the product name (e.g. Pack of 3 Pencils, Pair of Dining Chairs, 16 Piece Cutlery Set)
- Brand included – Ensure your brand name is present at the start of your product name (e.g. Mason Cash Cake Caddy). Do not include supplier or manufacturer names if they are not the brand of the product, as customers are unlikely to search for supplier names, making your product more difficult for customers to find.
Good Product Name Example:
- Describes design.
- Mentions what the product is.
- Does not contain spec information.
Bad Product Name Examples:
- Dimensions are stated.
- No mention of what the product is (unit / cupboard).
- Title is all in upper case.
- It doesn’t state that it is a cat toy.
- Dimensions are stated.
- Spelling mistake.
Key Product Features
The purpose of the key product features is to give the customer a quick snapshot of the product’s USPs and features before they read the full description. For this reason, it should only be 3 – 5 bullet points and should never be more than one very short statement for each point.
There should be no capitalisation or special characters and punctuation should be kept to a minimum.
What makes a great set of Key Product Features?
- Few words for each – Each bullet point should be no longer than a few words. It should not be a full and comprehensive sentence or multiple sentences. For this reason, each feature has a max limit of 50 characters,
- No capitalisation – If the bullet points are the right length, there should be no need to make certain words/phrases stand out
- No punctuation or special characters – Where possible whilst remaining grammatically correct, avoid the use of punction. The features should not include full stops or exclamation marks. Commas can be used if they are needed to make the points grammatically correct.
- No specification information - Unless it is a USP (e.g. “constructed from galvanised steel”), there should be no spec information included in the features. It should not contain dimensions, weight, material, whether assembly is required, a full list of what’s included (if it’s a large set), or any other info that the customer should and could look in the specification section for.
- Cannot be a single word – Whilst the aim is to keep the features short, they cannot be a single word as this is not descriptive enough and looks out of place on the page. For example, you can’t just put “pretty”, but you could put “pretty blue bird pattern”.
- Variant Features not the same as Product Features – when providing the key product features, ensure that any variant features are not the same as the overall product features as variant features are shown underneath the product features when a selection is made and it will create duplicated content on the page.
- Do not copy phrases from the description – Reword rather than copying phrases already in the description. This ensures you’re not repeating yourself and also allows you to capture more keywords on your product page.
- Use sentences to describe items – If one of the USPs is simply that it comes with a desired accessory, then try to expand this into a clear sentence. For example, say “One water bomb bag included” rather than “water bomb bag”.
- Items within a set should be a single feature – For example, “One large pot and two small pots included”. This does not apply for large sets containing a long list of items – for this, you can use the “includes” attribute in the specifications section and also include a comprehensive list of what’s included in the product description.
Description
The product description should be the largest body of text on the page. If a customer has been drawn in by the image and brief key product features, they will then dedicate more time to reading the description, especially for high-value items.
This is your opportunity to expand on the points in your key product features. For example, if your key product feature said:
“130 bar max pressure & 430L/hour max flow”
then you can expand in the description by saying:
“With max 130 bar pressure washer and max 310l/h water flow this machine will quickly remove the dirt from patios, driveways, cars, caravans, boats and more”.
As the main goal of this section is to fully describe the product, you should use adjectives and descriptive phrases, commenting on the appearance and functionality of the item…
To persuade a customer to purchase the item, you should also provide examples of how this product will contribute to their home or help them with a task…
Lastly, when it is a set/pack, try and write about individual items in the description. This, alongside the features and specifications, will make it explicitly clear what the customer can expect to receive when they purchase the item.
Example Description
Sub-standard Description:
The Matrix Cuzzo Sienna Rug is a lovely addition to your home. This real wool pile rug features a zig zag design in various shades of red and orange.
Great Description:
Stylish and luxurious, the Matrix Cuzzo Sienna Rug will add a fresh and contemporary touch to any room in your home. Made from 100% wool pile, this rug features an Aztec inspired geometric pattern in warm, earthy tones. Available in an array of vibrant shades, this rug is a wonderful way to create a focal point in your bedroom, living room or dining area.
We generally recommend you provide between three to five descriptive sentences for your descriptions, however, the more information you can provide and the longer you can make your descriptions, the better. This way, you’re encompassing as many keywords as possible for SEO and gives customers detailed information. However, bear in mind that customers are unlikely to read large walls of text, so be economical where you can.
Attributes
Attributes are used to give customers the extra technical information they need about your product, including its colour, dimensions, materials, power info, age suitability, and more.
Having a comprehensive list of attributes with as much information as you can give ensures customers know everything they need to about a product without seeing it and are also used to help customers use the relevant filters on the left-hand navigation whilst searching for products they want.
When you have products with multiple variants, your attributes should have at least one that is unique. For example, if you’ve got a sofa that’s the same in design and size, but comes in three colours, each colour should be clearly labelled for customers to choose from on the selectors. If your attributes do not have at least one unique variant, then customers will be unable to choose a product and add it to their basket.
However, if you have lots of unique variants then this can become confusing for customers and tends to look chaotic on the website.
For products with multiple variants, aim for no more than three selectors to keep things user-friendly.
Basic Requirements
Shopping online is a vastly different experience for customers to shopping in store and, as they cannot physically pick up the object to assess its size and texture, we need to be able to provide enough accurate information to create a visual in their mind. For this reason, ALL products, regardless of their department or category, should not progress through Detailing without the below information:
- ALL dimensions (height, width, depth, length, diameter)
- Weight
- Material
- Colour
- Pack size (if more than one)
- ALL items / accessories / fixings included
- ALL features / settings / functions
Department Requirements
In addition to the basic requirements previously listed, each department has its own mandatory attributes that need to be input before the product can progress through Detailing. Some are required for compliance reasons; others are listed to maintain high standards and consistency across the website.
For more information on the specific requirements recommended for each of our departments, please view our Zendesk article on Variation Attributes or view the appendix at the end of this document.
Technicalities & Grammar
Our brand tone and voice is applied across all of our sales channels and customer communications and is something that we work hard to maintain. When supplying us with pre-written copy, we’ll thoroughly review it to ensure that it adheres with the below guidelines and standards.
To maintain consistency in the content on our site, helping to transfer customer trust and increase sales, please…
- Use British English spelling (e.g. ‘centre’ not ‘center’ and ‘colour’ not ‘color’).
- Use conjunctions where appropriate (e.g. ‘we’re’ and ‘you’re’).
- Hyphenate compound adjectives such as “on-the-go” and “3-in-1”.
- Use the metric system where possible (e.g. 2m, 150cm, 1L).
- Do not capitalise whole words.
- Do not mention the year/date (e.g. “great for 2021”) as this ages the product.
- Do not put statements like “UK number 1” as this may not be true in years to come.
- Do not repeat words in the same paragraph - make use of synonyms.
- Do not say anything morally ambiguous.
- Do not use profanity.
- Do not mention products being on sale or promotion, as they might not be in the future.
Images
For each product, you will need to supply as least one ‘default’ image of the product. This is the image that will be displayed on listers which customers will see whilst browsing. All additional product images will appear after the ‘default’ image on the product page image carousel and will not be visible to customers browsing the site until they click onto the product page.
There are two types of images that can be featured on a product page: on-white shots and lifestyles. As a minimum, a single on-white shot is required for each variant of each product, however, we encourage as many images as you can provide to give the customer the best idea and view of your product.
Quality
All Images must meet the following quality and formatting standards:
- Minimum resolution of 1500px x 1500px
- 72dpi
- JPG or PNG format
On-White Shots
Where an on-white image has been supplied, the background should be completely white and free from any other products or items. Even if the product has been photographed against a white backdrop, it will still need to be edited to fully remove the background.
Lifestyle shots
Accompanying lifestyle images of the product, as well as close-ups of its key selling features (e.g. buttons, control panels, material, finish), are desirable and should be used as the ‘default’ image for high-value items such as furniture, patio sets, and garden structures.
To avoid misleading customers, all lifestyle images must portray the product clearly and as the main focal point of the image.
- Unit is the main focus of the image
- Easy to determine what is being sold
- Easy to picture how it could be styled
- No one item is the focus
- Not clear what is being sold
Limitations and expectations of Photoshop
We understand that using Photoshop on product images can sometimes be part and parcel of creating an ideal shot, such as removing the background for on-white shots or enhancing the colour if your lighting doesn’t show the product off to its full potential. However, heavily edited images and lifestyles could deter customers from purchasing. We recommend not super-imposing your product into a lifestyle image and instead try to get shots of real people using your product where possible – that way, customers can see what it’s like to use and imagine themselves using it.
We also recommend that your background should be achievable in a customer’s home. For example, if you want to show off your luxurious patio set, Photoshopping it on to a Caribbean beach, whilst looking lovely, doesn’t show customers what it will look like in their home, so they’re less likely to complete the purchase. Try to keep your lifestyle shots realistic and achievable in the average British home or garden.
Videos
Videos can be added to product pages to further demonstrate how to assemble or use the item or just to showcase them in a more engaging format. Video content is encouraged, but not mandatory.
To attach a video to your product pages, it will first need to be published on a YouTube channel. It can then be embedded on the product page using the embed token found in the URL.
The video will appear in the image carousel alongside your images.
Adding videos to product pages is not currently supported on the Marketplace platform but this feature will be coming soon. Once video support becomes available, we will notify all Sellers and Suppliers via email.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
When writing copy for your products, it’s important to have SEO in mind. Optimising your content for both search engines like Google and our own on-site search bar will help customers to find your product.
Here are a few things that you can do to ensure your copy is optimised and your product pages draw in more customers…
Keywords
Keywords are essential for generating organic traffic. Organic traffic means customers who stumble upon your product page by searching relevant terms, usually equating to a large percentage of traffic. Ensuring you have the right words in the product name, key product features, description, and specifications will help customers to find the item in Google and on our website.
However, using too many keywords can also have a negative impact on SEO as Google will penalise the product page, and subsequently our site, for “keyword stuffing”. Utilise synonyms to avoid repeating words (e.g. for a throw, you could also use ‘blanket’ or ‘home accessory’ or ‘soft furnishing’), but make sure that they are placed naturally within the text and that the copy still flows well.
The title of your product should be featured within the first sentence of your description, preferably near the start as search engines attribute the most value to the first words of text.
Content Length
Product descriptions that are too short (one sentence or less) are undesirable. They cannot contain all the keywords that are essential for your product and will be much harder to find. It also prevents Google from clearly understanding what your product is.
Whilst your description should contain your product title, it should never be just the name of the product.
On the other hand, overly long descriptions will likely contain a lot of unnecessary text and be cut off by the max character length on our product pages. This will create a poor customer experience and may result in diminished sales. There is no good reason for including long and superfluous sentences that contribute no SEO value to the page. Unless your product has a huge array of features, try to stick to a maximum of 5 sentences – even this will be too much for most household items.
Meeting Our Standards
Bad product content leads to poor sales figures and high return rates, putting you out of pocket and leaving our customer dissatisfied. If the product content, including descriptions, features, attributes, and all media, fail to meet our standards and requirements, the products will be returned to a draft state, with the status ‘needs work’.
You will be given the opportunity to review and improve the content supplied for your items so that they meet our standards and can be listed on the website.
